Next-Generation Engineering and Avionics
The Boeing 747-8F is not a simple upgrade of the 747-400. It integrates technologies derived from the 787 Dreamliner, particularly regarding the GEnx-2B67 engines and avionics architecture. The heart of its communication capability is the Flight Management System (FMS) integrated with the latest generation Mode-S transponders. These devices do not just respond to Secondary Surveillance Radar (SSR) interrogations but actively transmit Extended Squitter (ES) data packets at 1090 MHz. The onboard avionics include the Rockwell Collins WXR-2100 MultiScan system, allowing for advanced weather management, whose heading and vertical speed data are reflected in the ADS-B messages captured by our feeders.
ADS-B and Mode-S Surveillance Protocols
The 747-8F operates under the DO-260B standard, the most stringent requirement for ADS-B Out. This protocol ensures that position accuracy (NACp) and integrity (NIC) are at the highest levels, allowing for reduced separation in congested airspaces. When a 747-8F flies over Europe or the Atlantic, its transponder emits a signal every 0.5-1 second. This signal contains not only GPS coordinates but also the flight identifier (Callsign), barometric altitude, and ground speed. For ADSBItalia receivers, the 747-8F is an ideal target due to its signal output power (typically 200-250 Watts), allowing reception at distances exceeding 400 km in optimal conditions.

Global Route Analysis and MLAT
747-8F routes are the vital corridors of the global economy. We often see them passing over ADSBItalia radars along polar or transatlantic routes (NATS). Thanks to Multilateration (MLAT) techniques, our network can calculate the position of these aircraft even when GPS data is not included in the ADS-B packet or during avionics testing. MLAT uses the Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA) of the Mode-S signal across at least four synchronized receivers. Given the high cruise altitude of the 747-8F (often above 35,000 feet), the signal has an exceptional Line of Sight, making it the perfect candidate for testing the sensitivity of our users' antennas.
